Director's Note

🎭 Spotlight on the Stage and the Soul: Why Guys and Dolls Means So Much To Me.

As we approach Opening Night for our incredible production of Guys and Dolls, my heart is absolutely bursting with joy. You all know how much I adore the collaboration that brings a show like this to life—seeing our Dance, Musical Theater, Instrumental Music, and Tech Theater majors unite on stage is the very essence of the North East School of the Arts spirit. That collaboration is pure magic, and it makes me so happy.

But this particular show holds a profoundly personal meaning for me, and I wanted to share a little bit of that story with our NESA family.

When Mr. Everidge and Ms. Bryant selected Guys and Dolls for this year's run, they couldn't have known the powerful chord it would strike. You see, years ago, I was on a high school stage myself, playing a Hot-Box Girl in the very same show. That production was led by a true icon in the industry, a remarkable woman named Charlotte Brown.

Ms. Brown’s impact on me, and countless others, was legendary. She was one of those rare people who could see the potential in a soul before anyone else—especially the soul itself. When I was a little vagabond troublemaker, she took me in. She kept me busy, kept me singing, dancing, and acting so much that I simply didn't have the time or energy to wander down the wrong path anymore. Her theater became my refuge and my guide. Frankly, if it weren't for Ms. Brown, I don't know what path my life would have taken, but I do know that it likely would not have been a good one.

I had so hoped to invite her to see our NESA production. Sadly, Ms. Brown's health recently took a turn, and her memorial service was just held last weekend. Though she is no longer with us physically, I know she is still here—in my heart.

As I watch our students now, I see our Directors making the same impact on our students as Ms. Brown had on me. I see the same unwavering mentorship and the same life-changing dedication that she once showed me. Our directors don't just teach the arts; they nurture character, build self-worth, and create a positive future for every student they guide. They see the potential, and they give students the structure and passion to achieve it.

This weekend, as you watch the bright lights, hear the unforgettable music, and applaud our students, I hope you’ll remember this story. Every performance is a testament to the power of the arts—the power to bring people together, yes, but also the power to save, redirect, and transform a life.

So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, Charlotte Brown, for seeing the worth in a vagabond troublemaker and helping me become who I am today. And thank you to all our NESA directors for carrying that torch for the next generation.

We can't wait to share this wonderful show with you. Get your tickets, settle into your seats, and enjoy the magic!
